- SAFER – in the Hierarchy of Controls, Elimination is the most effective method of controlling the hazard. Following Elimination is, 2) Substitution, 3) Isolation, 4) Engineering Controls, 5) Administrative Controls and 6) PPE. In the case of working at height (e.g. roof, tower, HV asset or large asset), the RPA eliminates the working at height, substitutes the hazard with a lower one (the RPA), isolates the personnel from the hazard (high voltage), and engineers out the risk of the hazard by changing the way people work (engineering and administrative controls).
- COST EFFECTIVE – RPA deployment reduces the duration (and equipment) it takes to perform an inspection and take pictures and videos. Whilst tool time is still required to fix any issues, the inspection results can be used to better plan and execute the final work in a more efficient manner.
- FASTER – the time to execute an inspection with a RPA is magnitudes better than manned inspections. Where multiple assets are to be inspected or the asset is complex, this is where maximum benefits can be attained.
- COMPREHENSIVE – RPA enable views and details that would be impractical or impossible with a manned inspection. Aerial views will capture more photos with greater context in a shorter time.
- REDUCED DOWNTIME – Inspections of many assets (electrical or HV assets, hot assets or hazardous assets) do not require any downtime of the asset. Lost productivity of the asset can cost more than the inspection itself. With on-line inspections, more frequent inspections can be performed, enabling prompt identification of any issues.
